Dear all,
This is for all of you, even the group I won't be seeing on Friday.
READ AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE OF THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON #womenrep
http://www.scoop.it/t/women-representation-in-the-media
MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO TWEET YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE MEDIA IN GENERAL, OR ON A PARTICULAR TEXT OR ISSUE (eg. Anti-page 3 campaign, women in music videos, or even specific artists and how they are represented..)
Students from other centres, including A2 students, are taking part as well over the next few days so make sure you use the hashtag to catch what they say.
Search for #womenrep and save the search. Then go back for updates from time to time, share your thoughts, build on others' contributions.
You could always discuss Mulvey's and Berger's ideas, for example "To what extent do you think that their ideas still stand? How do you know?"
The more you engage, the more you will get out of it. Go back to the resources and read/watch something else everyday. 10 minutes well spent.
OTHER ON-GOING WORK:
- Berger sheet annotated a bit better. Take a pic and upload to your induction blog or write up your notes in a post.
- KEY VOCABULARY / TERMINOLOGY: Not everyone has completed this. PLEASE CATCH UP.
- All work on representation of women to be posted. Remember that this is evidence of your level of understanding/ attainment at this point in the course - Don't hesitate to go back and edit/improve your posts.
ALSO, PLEASE PUBLISH YOUR DRAFTS - THIS WAY, I CAN COMMENT / ADVISE.
I KNOW IT IS ON-GOING WORK.
- George and Leena, your videos on Basic camerawork ARE NOW ON YOUTUBE AND BELOW. SOME ERRORS HAVE OCCURRED WITH THE TITLES AT THE BEGINNING THOUGH. When you change the titles in Controls, make sure the playhead in Final Cut is where you need it to be.
YOU'LL NEED TO REVIEW THIS.
Embed into your Induction blog for now and comment on the mistakes.
- Take photos and short films to show off your understanding of camerawork and mise-en-scene.
Embed into blog regularly with a caption/quick comment on what you were trying to achieve + what you'd like to do better.
- Over on your Film Industry Blog, all your research should be completed and documentary uploaded.
- FINALLY, here's the recording of your discussion. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMBED INTO YOUR BLOG, ENGAGE, REFLECT AND COMMENT!
REMEMBER THAT WE WILL BE TESTING YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF KEY TERMS SOON.
WANT TO STRETCH YOUR KNOWLEDGE?

This week, two other centres are joining us for an online discussion on the representation of women in the media.
We are tweeting resources to help you tackle the topic with more thought and will ask for responses to questions based on some of these texts and the topic in general.
You will find some resources in the post below (after the plenaries) and also here:
SCOOP.IT PAGE ON REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN
All your tweets will need to use the hashtag #womenrep in order to be archived and discussed further later.
Make sure you join in!!! It's a great chance to interact and share ideas with students beyond our school.
More details to be emailed soon.

Second group's plenaries #womenrep
Once again, please add comments below this post focusing on the CONTENT.
What is clearly explained?
What is not so clear?
Where are the gaps?
Are the examples relevant?
Are enough key words used? Are they used appropriately?
What key words are missed out?
Overall, do you think this reflect the level of learning achieved in the lesson?

Work due in if you had your first lessons
- Your blogs should be set up. Email me if you're still struggling at h.o'shea@parkhighstanmore.org.uk
- All of you must follow out Twitter account @parkhighmedia
If you do not have a Twitter account, create one now. It takes seconds.
Please understand that WE DO NOT FOLLOW BACK.
- Task 1: Continue working on your film industry documentary. You have been given detailed guidance to help your research.
- Task 2: For those of you who had a lesson with me, we started learning about Representation in the Media.
You should complete the following tasks:
First listen to the following plenary (video) and write some comments below this post summing up what you think is clearly explained and what should have been clearer in the video. It would be good to see you build on each other's comments.
Be as specific as possible to showcase your understanding so far. (No need to comment on the fact that the light source is behind you!)
- Task 3: You have been given a handout on John Berger's Ways of Seeing (3 slides). You need to read carefully and annotate, including questions if you are struggling with it. You can take a picture of the completed work and upload to your blog or you could write up your notes on your blog. Bring your annotated sheet to next lesson.
- Task 4: Read the following article and tweet your reactions using the hashtag #womenrep before our next triple. Please make sure you engage with the conversation.

The Sun's Page 3 is the highly visible tip of misogyny's iceberg
A lot of women feel that people who want an end to Page 3 are uptight harridans, envious, bitter and prudish, but it's important to understand why this editorial gimmick is so nasty
GOOD LUCK AND SPREAD THE LOAD. EMAIL OR TWEET IF YOU'RE STRUGGLING.
